ThunderPack, designed by Carmelo Amarena, is actually a redesign of hydrogen peroxide-powered jet packs of the 1950s. It looks like it will send you noisily into the air for roughly 35 seconds and about 8-12 feet off the ground. It cost him $100,000 to make and is not worth every penny. It did, however, provide us with some grade A- youtube entertainment. The entertainment factor is not so much the jet pack, but more the 1960s villain-ish music at the beginning.

So someone out there named "Lionheartsrealm" has an e-bay store, and absolutely no life. They have created this 36 in. long <strike>deadly metal tweezer</strike> replica of the Energy Sword from Halo 2&3. The bidding has begun at $125.00, and has been climbing at a rapid rate all the way up to $127.45 (this guy is the leading bidder at the moment). The auction refers to this as a "Life Size Replica" of the sword, and says that it has a "custom handle fit for any elite". I would bid myself, but I definitely fear the consequences. If wielding the sword in Halo causes people to yell and call you a sword-whore, I think wielding this thing in public would result in much worse name calling. Words like, "nerd", "loser", "dork", and "OH MY GOD IT'S A STABBING MANIAC!!!" might be used liberally. Also, I don't think the cops would appreciate the artistic merits of such a Halo re-enactment. One more pic after the jump

The World is a world-class (oh, I went there) ocean liner. It is managed by the company Residensea and is the world's first ocean liner residence. The on-board domiciles range from one bedroom to three bedrooms and studio apartments. The dwellings range in price, but they all lie in the millions (yes, plural), so unless you've been adding to the swear jar your whole life or are very rich, chances are that you can't afford it.

Who might find this nomadic residency attractive? To quote their website:

Those of us who enjoy luxury yacht ownership or those that may be attracted to private residence clubs or destination clubs will find that The World is a perfect travel option. We savour the sense of anticipation as morning brings a new port in a hitherto-unvisited quarter of the globe, glancing out of the window to see, instead of the lane leading down to the post box ..... Sydney, Hong Kong or St. Tropez on the horizon.

The community operates much like a homeowners association. The travel location choices are very democratic; the residents vote for the location and the ship sets sail. The boat comes complete with stores, medical facilities, gym, sports courts, pools, spas, resturaunts, and more. If you love traveling via ocean that much, and are not rich, for a lot less money, you can buy space on my resident "ocean liner" which comes complete with an old wooden door (for floating), a cotton sheet sail (for moving), an oar (in case there is no wind), and some floaties for safety compliance (safety is our number one concern!). Consider it. You won't not be not loving it <strike>or your money back</strike>. More pictures after the jump.

Remember 4th Grade? Remember slap bracelets - those little plastic/paper things that were shaped like measuring tape? Well, they're back, and Chocolate Agency is out to make them cool again. Their new E-Paper series design is a slap bracelet, made with a thin flexible screen, that can tell the time and hold pictures. One may be worried about length adjustment, but fear not, for the ends can be extended by adding magnetic pieces. As for power, this thing uses kinetic energy to charge while you move around; for you educationally challenged, that means it uses the energy produced from you just walking around and doing your everyday thing. These look like the handcuffs my girlfriend uses on me. Don't get excited, though, she only puts them on me when she's not home, so she can make sure I'm not having any fun. And they are not really hadcuffs, either, more just zip ties with her picture glued all over. One more picture after the jump.

Brando, the company who seems to make a telescoping lens for everything, has decided to put their handiwork towards a telephoto lens for the iPhone. Selling for $19, you can now look like a total creeper while taking pictures with your iPhone. To put it into Brando's own <strike>completely incomprehensible</strike> totally clear words...

The new design to run of rays can effectively avoid the contortion of image, and makes the super wide angle, the larger luminous flux, the higher visual acuteness, good for color reduction, which makes the high quality of photography.

I'm pretty sure the person who wrote this does not actually speak english, but may have quickly glanced at some sort of hybrid camera/telescope wiki article edited by a 9 year-old special ed student. I would get one of these, but I have my own methods for snooping around on people that don't require a screw-on attachment for a phone I don't have. Unfortunately, my method does not come with the ability to "larger luminous flux", but I'm working that that one. Until then, one point to Brando.

<Brando>

This site is now offering the "Galaxy" Watch that harkens back to the days of NES, Neon Clothing, and completely unsafe toys. For the price of <strike>W</strike> 77,000, which I'm told translates to roughly $82 USD, you can own this piece of nostalgia, while also being able to roughly approximate the time. I know I've been waiting for a product like this for years. While Mario may not have worn a watch, I usually like to be able to tell time while I perform my Super Mario Brothers re-enactments. These usually consist of me eating a ton of mushrooms, dressing up like a plumber, and making a little trip to the turtle exhibit at the Zoo. In other news, a dozen children were hospitalized yesterday in a bizzare turtle-throwing related incident at the Zoo. More pictures after the jump...

With so many people ringing HD-DVD's Death Bell these days, I can barely hear myself think. It seems like Samsung is the latest in the long line of people to declare the death of HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray the victor in the format battle. It's kind of a bummer, too, because the BD-UP5000 was a nice little dual format player. It came with HDMI 1.3, full 1080p support, an ethernet cable (for some reason), and the ability to play <strike>Betamax 2</strike> HD-DVDs as well as Sony's Blu-Ray format. This news is especially rough on me personally, because I have invested so much into the HD-DVD format. I bought my whole family HD-DVD shirts and players and movies for Christmas. And by "my whole family" I mean "me", and by "Christmas" I mean "A week ago". Oh well, I guess I can just put all that in the heap next to my Apple Newton, Divx player, BetaMax, IBM's PCjr, Sega Dreamcast, and WebTV.

It seems that Viral Marketing campaigns are all the rage these days, and it seems that some company out there is coupling a Viral campaign with a Cloverfield-esque product reveal. With literally zero details, and only a handful of mysterious images, the "Liscio" has captured the imaginations of some UK tech bloggers. The phone, supposedly slated to hit UK Streets in February, doesn't even have a confirmed manufacturer or carrier. Honestly, I don't think that there is any way that they could have given any less information. This sort of approach might work for video games and movies when the campaigns start months ahead of time, but given the short time frame, this is starting to seem more and more shady. If I had to guess, I'd say that Infinium Labs is behind this, and they are probably going to claim that it is a revolution that will change the way you game/phone/listen/bathe/eat forever (so you should give them lots of money).
In case you've been living under a rock (or a rock-shaped Death Star replica) since 1977, you've heard of that little Sci-Fi movie "Star Wars". Well, with the recent <strike>piece of trash</strike> box office smash "Transformers", the good folks over at thinkgeek have created the bastard child of these two franchises. Meet the Darth Vader/Death Star Transformer. For $49.99 you recieve 3 mini figures of Storm Troopers, 3 Mini Tie Fighters, one Mini Darth Vader and the 11-inch tall Darth Vader Transformer. The <strike>figurine</strike> Transformer makes different sounds depending upon what "mode" it is in, and what weapons are in Darth Vader's hand at any given time. This is almost as cool as the Star Wars themed Transformer I made a few years ago. It came with one Darth Vader doll, and one Microwave. It transformed from a life-like replica of Darth Vader, into a life-like replica of Darth Vader after being Microwaved. We're still researching a way to make him transform back. More pictures after the jump.

At a press conference today at New York City's America Museum of Natural History, Sir Richard Branson went showing off his new space ship models. He, designer, Burt Rutan, and investor, Paul Allen, have been venturing into space tourism for a while now, but it finally seems that it is becoming a reality. They say that their latest model, the Space Ship Two, is about 60 percent complete, and they expect to perform test flights as early as this summer. The planned official launch date (see what I did there?) rests somewhere in 2009. "What might it cost me to frolic in space", you say? 100 rich individuals have already reserved tickets at a price of $200,000. Shoot, I'll send you into space for less money that that - POW, straight to the moon!

Modu, formally Infone-Tech, is a new mobile startup company. CEO of the Isreali company, Dov Moran, is the former owner of M-Systems, a company which was sold to SanDisk for over $1 and a half billion. Their official website only displays, "launching soon," with with an abstract side view of what seems to be their new mobile device. Modu's product is suspect for conjecture, and they want to make you guess what they have to bring to the table. Their newest video, an obvious marketing ploy, makes the viewer think that their Modu will become an integral part of their everyday lives. It is well made, and I'll admit, I want to know what it's all about.

Success or flop? It looks like all we can do is wait. Since the video is beckoning speculation, I'll bite and let you know what I think. From what I can tell, it is an electronic device that wakes you up, makes your coffee, distracts you on your drive to work, distracts you at work (so it probably gets you fired), and doubles as a sex toy. I've been told that my observational skills are something to be desired.

Okay, okay. This is pretty sweet. There has already been a fast, working NES emulator, but coder, ZodTTD, has decided to step it up and develop an SNES emulator for the iPhone. Star Fox, Super Mario World, and Super Punch Out, among many others, are some of the best video games ever released. I love playing my old Super Nintendo, and I think my iPhone is just swell, so I can't wait to get my hands on this thing. When I first played Super Punch Out with my brother, when we were kids, I had so much fun. He didn't, though, because instead of playing on the Super Nintendo, I played with my fist... and his face. A second video after the jump.

I'm a big fan of computer case mods, and I'm also a big fan of Team Fortress 2, so this computer mod probably completed my life. They designed it after the engineer's turret from the game, and it looks deadly. This thing is a full 40 inches of beautiful turrety action. I am quite the PC case modder, myself. My last computer mod ended up being a motherboard jammed into a bread box. It was a tight fit so I had to "mod" my video card by "sawing it in two" and that somehow "voided my warranty". Asshole warranty help line. I didn't have their card, but still hanging up on me because I was being "irrational"? What the hell?

Swongler on "Japanese Toilet Training Videos are Serious. Don't Laugh."

It must be Japanese theme day here at Swongled.com; every other post today has been related to Japan in some way. To carry on with this theme, here is another one! These are two videos about a (tiger?) boy named Shimajiro. He has to pee and poop. His family teaches him to pee and poop in toilets. At the end of the first video is an advertisement for a product that is most definitely a waste of money, and definitely something I want. These videos are not particularly new, but they are incredibly hilarious, and educational!

No punch line here. The videos speak for themselves. A second video after the jump.

Videos found by searching youtube with boredom. "Don't laugh" is a challenge, not a command.

The Brando USB Bluetooth V2.0+EDR Adapter is a minuscule USB Bluetooth adapter that can be used in laptop or desktop PCs, and allows you to connect to up to 7 wireless Bluetooth devices. Unfortunately, the adapter only allows you to connect to Bluetooth 1.1 devices, and the Bluetooth 2.0 devices that have quickly become the standard among wireless phones. This device is now available for $25 at many online stores. Personally, I have no use for this device, as I don’t even know what a Bluetooth is. Last time I dealt with something akin to a “Blue Tooth” that could talk to “Penny-Sized Devices”, I had just ingested a pint of something called “LSD”, and was playing a game of chess on the Moon with Elton John and Liberace… that was one gay game of chess.

Have you ever looked back at old movies and cartoons (pre 1980) that depicts the year 2000 with flying cars and hovering cities and though, "boy did they get that all wrong"? Well, movies today paint a similar picture, but the difference is that we might not be too far away. The Minority Report's hand-guided computer navigation is a perfect example. Cynergy Labs used Microsoft's surface interface, Johnny Chung Lee's wiimote ideas, and their own programming to come up with a glove-navigation system, not unlike you see in the Hollywood blockbuster:

As computers become more interactive, it will be interesting to see what other things change might bring. Wanna know what I see? I see a new generation of porn-surfers on the horizon. It's not easy to predict the future, but its easy see where it's going, and man, are we going downhill.

It looks like the Japanese are at it again… This time, they may have outdone themselves with one of the creepier concepts in recent memory. There are a handful of prototype robots floating around <st1 :country-region w:st="on"></st1><st1 :place w:st="on">Japan</st1> that have been designed to teach school kids traditional Japanese dances. Also, these robots have no legs. Is it just me, or is the idea of a legless robot teaching traditional dance going against the principle of it being traditional? I’m pretty sure legless robots were not teaching (or performing) these dances when they were first created. In other news, legs are not necessary for performing Japanese dances. Apparently they are all performed while completely stationary. This is good news for me, because I don’t like moving a whole lot unless I am rewarded with strippers or alcohol… or strippers with alcohol. I don’t think Japanese dance involves either of those, although it might involve tentacles. The upcoming 1030SW boasts some pretty impressive durability statistics. This bad boy is drop proof from up to 6 feet, waterproof up to 30 feet, and can brave the elements at temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. It also boasts an impressive 10.1 MP sensor, 3.6x optical zoom, and a 2.7 in. LCD. So if you, much like me, enjoy playing “toss the camera into the pool from a height of 6 feet, and then toss it from the pool into the freezer”, then you should run out and pick one up in March… you will save a lot of money in the long run on digital cameras. Also, if you enjoy playing that game, you are probably an idiot.

There has been a growing trend in Japan, recently. More and more SMS-based novels, written mostly by young adult women, are being released. These thumbmasters of text messaging had been previously criticized as pseudo-authors, offering nothing but a weak subgenre of literature - that was, until recently, however. Over the years, these SMS novels have been reaching the book stands in paper form. To the critics' surprise, they have been selling very well. Book sales last year showed that five of the top ten sellers, in Japan, were mobile phone novels. Furthermore, the top three were all written by first-time novelists on this cellular platform. Rin, age 21, pictured above, was one of the top selling authors with over 400,000 hardcover books sold. It seems that these cell phone addicts are smacking around literary professionals with nothing but their lightning fast thumbs and girly wit. But I bet that with all that text-trained dexterity, they can do all kinds of cool stuff ... like win thumb wars and give positive reinforcement.

This Lego heavyweight tips the scales at 30 lbs, and measures 73 inches long. It is a replica of Grevious's ship from Star Wars Episode III. It took builder, Mark Kelso, a dedicated 9 months to complete. You could say that this thing has been his baby from conception to birth (sorry, I had to do it, the analogy fits too well). The only real difference is that instead of sexing up a woman, he spent months at home building this thing to perfection.
This TV-Guitar is a hybrid that rivals the genius of my plum-apricot tree in my backyard (seriously, 2 kinds of delicious from the same tree). It has the neck and pickups of an electric guitar with an LCD embedded in the body. The pickups send signals to a sensor which relays appropriate instructions to the LCD's computer, giving you a visually psychedelic trip whilst rocking out. This is much like the TV-harmonica I made. It's less intricately wired, and more a harmonica duct taped to an old 13inch TV. It weighed 22lbs and didn't display any images, but I like to think I looked cool when I brought it up on stage, and by stage, I mean Parents' basement.

This beast of a camera packs one hell of an aesthetic punch. Its claims to fame are its 16x7 format photography at resolutions over 7,500x21,250 (160 million pixels), a 48-bit RGB color depth, and high dynamic range capabilities. Other formats it suports are 6x6, 6x5, and 6x15. The digital photography records to an attached tablet PC where each individual image is rendered at over 300MB/second; these render speeds are more than necessary, seeing how each picture comes in at around 900MB, each. There are two different options for the attachable tablet PC, a Core2Duo system, and a Pentium Mobile system, for HDR and basic rendering, respectively. The whole thing weighs over 10lbs and costs about $45,000. This thing puts my 2 megapixel pocket camera to shame, but costs about the same. I was terribly ripped off. Don't buy from "photography experts" that deal from the back of their van.

Microsoft is facing a warranted class-action law suit after they reported record Xbox Live sales in December. In the suit filed on January 4, Texas gamers, Keith Kay, Orlando Perez, and Shannon Smith, claim that they, along with millions of other Xbox Live subscribers suffered over 5$ Million in damages. A little background: the surge in Xbox Live subscribers over the holidays caused major problems on Microsoft’s gaming servers, causing lost/failed connections, slow game play, and feature loss, among other issues. So, why take on the behemoth of a company for only few weeks of having to spend some time outdoors? The four gamers' consumer fraud lawyer, Jason Gibson, who boasts a perfect record in court, explained to MTV.com:

"These are not guys looking to get rich... They are in their late 20s and 30s. They are college-educated. These are not young kids who just turned 18 and [want] to sue for the fun of it. This is, to them, a real issue... They can't get their complaints addressed by a company like Microsoft, the only way to get their attention is in numbers... What they would like to see is Microsoft fix the problem... They'd like to be reimbursed for the money they spent when they haven't received the service, and hopefully it will make Microsoft do the right thing in the future."

Microsoft reported that they have lured and snaged over 10 million Live subscribers, mainly due to holiday season sales. Gibson states:

"If they had not anticipated the sales, then they would not have put out that many units of the Xbox to begin with... They take the money for the subscriptions, but they don't make sure that the service is going to be there... They kind of put the cart before the horse."

Seems legit enough to me. Since Live went down, I was forced to get off the couch, and where my ass used to be, was nothing but sharp skin and bone, my legs failed to function properly, and all I could think about was destroying armor-plated Halo characters. I think I can get into this suing thing... but not for the money, that's only a bonus byproduct of my just cause. Microsoft just failed to provide a “service” that they promised me.

Remember those little tape thingies that music used to come on? Well, they're back... kinda. http://www.chinavision.com is trying to bring them back in a strange sort of way. They are now releasing a cassette that doubles as an MP3 player. You simply plug a SD card into it's SD slot, and it acts as if the MP3s stored on the SD card were songs on a cassette tape. The MP3 Cassette comes with no internal memory, and can also be used as a standalone player by plugging headphones into it. Did I mention that it is a cassette? Seriously now, when is the last time you saw a cassette player for sale, or heard of someone going down to the store to pick up "That new Duran Duran Tape"? You know what's a better idea? A vinyl MP3 player. That way, you could be at least quasi-cool, because vinyl is all retro and stuff, while cassettes are still just sorta technology that is relegated to cars made before 1995. In other news, my 8 Track player could use MP3s as well... someone tell http://www.chinavision.com, and maybe they can help me out.

In a move that is sure to mean nothing in a few months, manufacturer Buffalo is releasing (in Europe only) a HD-DVD/BluRay combo drive. It has the ability to burn and read BluRay discs, and the ability to read (and not burn) the soon-to-be defunct HD-DVD format. With pricing and availability yet to be revealed, and no North American release date yet announced, this seems like a pretty useless piece of tech. Honestly, they might as well just throw a BetaMax/BluRay combo out there, or perhaps VHS/BluRay. They're about as relevant now as HD-DVD is going to be in a year or two. Why don't they just throw a Divx reader on there while they're at it (not the video format, but the now-defunct DVD competetor, for those of you under the age of 20). If they wanted to interest me more, they would make a BluRay/Beer combo drive. It would be a BluRay player that came with beer... so I could get drunk. That would be awesome, also it would save me money on beer. Hell, they could make a BetaMax/Beer combo drive and I'd buy it. I suppose that's the only downfall of being an alcoholic.... that and the horrible pains in my liver.

This concept design by Nuno Oleveira is pretty sweet. The shiny metal bracelet encloses a flexible led that tells the time. It's only a concept design, but it may be real, someday. I'm sure it will cost more than you can afford, though. This watch/bracelet seems to be made for humans, but looks like it belongs on a cyborg, 20 years from now, or something. It's like looking into the future, and oh, look at that - I'm just as handsome and charming. Good news, ladies. More pictures, just follow the permalink.

Well, the people over at 3F-Studio have done it. They have designed something so ugly and pointless that I realize why alien invaders would ever want to destroy us, in the first place (Hollywood makes so much more sense, now). Shame on you, humanity. This Frankenstein-esque monster makes me want to bring an angry mob, complete with torches and pitchforks, to the doorstep of 3F. They designed it after the Converse shoe for Converse shoe enthusiasts, but even the most dedicated of Converse fans wouldn't want this huge, ugly display of audio disgrace anywhere near their wall-mounted collection of footwear. It's fair to assume that Converse lovers also appreciate music, so kudos to 3F, but insulting to think that anyone would want to buy this thing. More pictures after the jump...
